The Butterfly Effect: Systemic Risks in the 21st Century
July 8-11, 2020

 The Olympia Summer Academy, organized by the Navarino Network in cooperation with the European International Studies Association, announces a special summer course for senior high school and university students on international affairs at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 Course Description:

The butterfly effect has become widely known to signify the sensitive dependence of remote and unconnected systems. The 21st century ushered in an era of unprecedented global connectivity – one that as the ongoing pandemic demonstrates affects every aspect of our daily lives. Taught by an interdisciplinary team of researchers, the objective of the course is to explore ways in which global interconnectivity, and the systemic risks that it generates, can be analyzed in a range of geopolitical, security, and socio-economic environments.

 Course Structure:

·         The 21st century changing security landscape (Harry Papasotiriou, Panteion University);

·         The emerging global (dis)order (Constantine Arvanitopoulos, Tufts University);

·         China as a ‘Threat’: From the ‘Yellow Peril’ to Covid-19 (Konstantinos Tsimonis, King’s College London);

·         God vs. Westphalia: Terrorism and the battle for organising the World (Andreas Gofas, Panteion University);

·         Energy politics and security risks (Konstantinos Filis, Institute of International Relations);

·         Global markets and financial risks (Wolfango Piccoli, Teneo Intelligence);
